The heart behind "The Live Sessions"
Last year, we opened a new chapter creatively as a band, and we call that chapter "The Live Sessions." In 2015 we released volume one, and just a week ago we released volume two. Upon releasing this recent volume, we realized we had yet to post an "official" statement explaining the heart behind it all. So, here we are taking a moment to share with you the heart behind the ongoing project.
To begin, we have always considered ourselves a "live band." The live setting is where we thrive and feel most comfortable in our skin. So in early 2015, when we began brainstorming what our next project would be, we knew we wanted it to be live. Normally, a "live" record means there is a crowd involved. But, as we processed and fleshed out what we hoped to create, we realized that what we really wanted to capture was the chemistry of playing TOGETHER. So, the concept for the live sessions was born.
The hope was to bring our friends and listeners into the entire "live" process. Because we can't be everywhere and so much of exposure happens online, we wanted visuals to play a big role. After recording each song simultaneously in the room (Vol 1: The Theater at Horizon Christian Fellowship, SD / Vol 2: Joshua Wilderness Institute), we then set up cameras to capture each performance. We are left with a live video for each track thats on the EP.
Once we decided on the "process," we needed to come together on content. A big part of our heart as a "live band" is to lead people in worship. Although we write songs that aren't always "congregational" in nature, we decided that the live sessions would be a great avenue to 1) release our more "congregational" originals, and then 2) cover some of our favorite songs we've been leading, all with arrangements that are completely accessible to the church in parts and instrumentation. The hope was that the visual content, as well as tutorial videos, would make the arrangements that much more accessible to all who heard/watched.
We've loved what we've been able to create with the live sessions, as it is but a piece of who we are as a band. We will continue releasing volumes of the live sessions, as well as more studio projects that will feature a full spectrum of "worship" songs. But, we hope that this chapter of our creating is able to encourage the local church as well as capture a substantial part of what our heartbeat is as a ministry.
